We're going to have to do something with the dog, obviously, but it's hard while Peanut's owner is still serving her DUI sentence in Camp Verde. All disasters aside, my family's still pretty cheery. No. You can't. But you can respond to situations when they do happen. And there are no-kill shelters, though I don't know how accessible one would be in your area. There are organizations that deal with problem dogs precisely because they don't want them getting put down. It might be a lot of effort, but if she can't support the dog it sounds like it would be worth it.
