I don't mean to sound wanky or anything, but I'm starting to get sick of women being graphically murdered on Supernatural. The show just wasn't this violent in the first and second seasons. Sure, there was blood, but the dude from "Home" getting his hand getting stuck in the garbage disposal was horror movie corny violence; a close-up a teenage girl being drowned in a toilet? It feels different, and I don't like it.

That said, "Criss Angel is a Douchebag" and "After School Special" were better episodes than I've seen in a while.

SECONDING THIS

[identity profile] pretzelcoatl.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, unfriendly. Most of the female characters end up getting killed or needing to be rescued. Plus there are icky race issues, too.

Part of me feels bad being all Serious Business especially since I loved the show at first and defended its second season even when there were a lot of detractors, but so much of it bugs me now that I just stopped watching. The only female character who seemed to be enjoying her powers while being a good person was written out of the show entirely, which pissed me off/

ARE YOU WASHING DISHES WITH THE DISPOSAL ON OR SOMETHING?

[identity profile] immelmanturn.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
NOT TRADITIONALLY. BUT I RUN THE DISPOSAL AFTER I TAKE ALL THE DISHES OUT OF THE SINK, AND SOMETIMES A SPOON SLIPS DOWN THERE.

Yeah, I've been a little disappointed with that lately, myself. Oh well. I'm still having fun watching it, so I guess it doesn't really matter, but.

Yeah, whenever I see that, it's like what? But, heh, the only time Supernatural has ever scared me was when I watched the entire first season back to back, then had to walk around an apartment complex alone at night. I was very >____>.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD CHECK BEFORE YOU RUN THE DISPOSAL THEN.

I'm starting to feel that way about Supernatural. I mean, I still enjoy watching the show, but defending it is like, so hard now. I cannot deny the fact that it has problems, and problems of the misogynistic nature are a lot harder to defend.

Ahahaha, I made the mistake of watching the first season mostly alone at home or in the middle of the night. That's what I get for thinking it would be a good idea to watch it since I was sick. I was actually scared of mirrors there for a bit with that Bloody Mary one. *hit*

Same, but I kind of miss what it used to be. Plus, I think they're fucking up Dean's character, which is pretty hard to ignore...

I dunno. I'm just gonna see how it goes before I pass judgment. Once they hit something that really irks me, I'll complain.

They're kind of losing me with Dean, because they keep harping on HE WAS TORTURED FOR FORTY YEEEEEEARS and I TORTURED PEOPLE AND I LIKED IT SAMMY and ANGST ANGST ANGST but then he's totally the same otherwise? wtf. Jensen Ackles doesn't even seem to be sure how he's supposed to be playing this guy anymore, and I don't blame him. And Sam's plot is completely stalled out, they just keep harping on the same things again and again and again...

...That's true. IDK. Supernatural's the only show I watch on TV really right now, so. I honestly don't pay attention to stuff as long as I'm entertained. /simple-minded

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I know what you mean. :\ I've been spending an increasing amount of time shielding my eyes and telling my friend "tell me when it's over!" while watching lately. (...then again, this applies to the non-graphic scenes as well *snerk*)

While I don't think Supernatural was really misogynistic in the beginning* (the first two seasons, anyway), I do think it's been getting a lot worse. I won't go into all my thoughts on that, since they go into the realm of "stuff that will cause wank", but yeah.

* my joke about being able to tell who was going to live or die based on hair color notwithstanding.

Heh, I really don't do a whole lot of this anymore, either—with other shows, yes, but not really Supernatural. SO A LOT OF THIS IS JUST STUFF I'M THINKING OF RIGHT NOW. I'll stay with the show unless it really pisses me off, I've been watching it for three years, after all. ^^

[identity profile] immelmanturn.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
THAT WOULD INVOLVE PUTTING MY HAND DOWN THERE. AND THAT'S A NO-NO.

IF IT'S OFF AND YOU DON'T HAVE A PSYCHOPATH OR A POLTERGEIST NEARBY, I THINK YOU'LL BE FINE.

EITHER THAT OR WASH STUFF ON THE SIDE OF THE SINK THAT DOESN'T HAVE THE DISPOSAL.

I guess some people are into that, but I'm really not and it's not why I watch the show, and it didn't use to be an issue. Now it is. Ugh.

I think it was a given, due to the format of the show, that the guys would be saving a lot of women in peril—especially since fanservice chicks were way comment. But now it's just, I don't know, the dynamic seems different to me. Plus there's a lot of "Whore! Bitch! Slut!" happening, and yeah, I get that they're talking about evil people who "just happen" to be women, but come on, it's all the damn time. :/

I think her fate had already been sealed, though, since when they started writing her like that is also when they made her start being pissed at the Winchesters for something John did and leaving her mother and never really showing up in the show again, except to be tortured by Meg a little bit.
