I don't mean to sound wanky or anything, but I'm starting to get sick of women being graphically murdered on Supernatural. The show just wasn't this violent in the first and second seasons. Sure, there was blood, but the dude from "Home" getting his hand getting stuck in the garbage disposal was horror movie corny violence; a close-up a teenage girl being drowned in a toilet? It feels different, and I don't like it.

That said, "Criss Angel is a Douchebag" and "After School Special" were better episodes than I've seen in a while.

They did! I didn't mind; it was telegraphed a mile away and it was kind of funny!

Why does everyone go for the garbage disposal. Whyyyyy.

...wait, how do you even make that FUNNY?

Actually, I think they've done it a few times now? In different episodes and different ways, regardless.

It was a Cuisinart in the episode before last! That was close enough.

I honestly don't mind about them brutally killing people in Supernatural anymore, honestly. I'm pretty used to gore stuff, even if it makes me squick every now and then if it's just ridiculous. I will agree they really have been stepping up the gore though, wtf. Didn't use to be so B horror movie in that regard.

That I thought was pretty funny.

It's easy, and everyone has it! Thus, it freaks people out.

... Well, some people find that kind of thing ... funny.

If you see someone stick someone's hand in a kitchen appliance and then watch said hand be ground up into bloody bits, you try not laughing.

I'm not a fan of graphic violence—I mean, I like zombie movies, but to me there's a difference between lol gore and like, violence with a kind of squicky intent, you know? But maybe that's just me. But one thing that bothers me is that a lot of SPN fans, whenever violence in an episode, are all, "Yes! This is what the old-school Supernatural was like!" And I'm like wtf it wasn't like that at all.

It has good points! A lot of good points. It's just, ah, not the most female friendly show on the air right now.

Heh. I saw it coming from so far away, so that didn't bug me.

[identity profile] pretzelcoatl.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I've gathered from other people! Which is sad because I saw one episode in the first (second?) season, the only one I saw, and I thought the middle-aged woman character seemed cool!

Well, I'm not fan of it, I'll say that. But I prefer the gore stuff over physiological horror or a lot of supernatural horror (lulz), since that stuff actually scares me. Gore just makes me go "whatever" usually, so. Zombie movies are a very big exception to that, ugh.

And, seriously? The original SPN episodes were kinda soft pedal compared to the recent episodes. Lately they've been really overdoing it a lot.

I will only touch my garbage disposal with a spatula. If one is not handy, a spoon or fork will do in a pinch. No bare fingers at ALL.

[identity profile] immelmanturn.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
IT IS VERY EASY.

[identity profile] pretzelcoatl.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
It might be that there's a prevailing attitude right now that it's even more horrifying that a woman gets killed in a graphic manner than if a man gets killed in a graphic manner, which generates more shock. The problem with this is it of course becomes kind of a crutch, and just makes things look lazy and, worse, really sleazy. It's kind of like how people are like "Drama? How about a rape scene!"

Yeah, same. Was pretty funny. "YOUR HAND GOES HERE DICK *SUDDENLY BLOOD*"

Maybe I should compare it to Heroes in terms of female unfriendliness, though!

Her name was Ellen! Yes, she was cool. She was the only woman who was cool, didn't die horribly, and lasted for more than an episode. The fangirls didn't even want her driven off the show! But there was some drama with the actress and now she's gone for good.

In reality, sure. In TV/movies/etc? Funny as shit.

And I wouldn't stick my hand down a garbage disposal unless I had a damn good reason anyway.

Huh, yeah, that does make sense. It's not very fair in terms of characters and plot, but. Eh, does make sense. They should fix that.

[identity profile] immelmanturn.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
MAYBE A LITTLE TOO CLOSE TO REALITY. I HAVE TOO MANY MANGLED SPOONS IN MY HOUSE FOR THIS TO BE REMOTELY AMUSING.

I haven't seen Heroes, is that friendly or unfriendly or what?
