Fuck you, White Collar. Your season finale was so fucking awful that I don't even care about your ridiculous as fuck ending. I don't care when you come back on the air again. I am no longer going to be telling people how well written you are and I'm starting to realize that you aren't nearly as friendly to your female characters as I initially thought.

You are on notice.

So I have not watched the whole episode yet... will do after work.
But! I think that Kate might not be dead. Don't know if this turns out to be true or not, but am sort of betting money that she'll turn up on season 2. Just a gut feeling (also the show has been playing with me all along, so hey, it could be done!)

And for some strange reason I don't think she's as innocent as she looks, but that's another thing altogether!

So hey, we only have to wait 6 months to find out! :)

It sort of makes me angry either way--if Kate's dead, then wtf was the point of having her around? She barely did anything at all man except say four or five lines on screen, and now she's randomly fridged? Uh.

And if she's alive, which I'm sure she is, we're absolutely not supposed to trust her, even though Neal does, because of the editorializing on Peter, Elizabeth, and Mozzie's end, even though their characterization of her seems to be drawn out of the air. It's like we're supposed to assume that poor Neal's being played even though there's really no evidence to suggest it, and that does not sit well with me man.

I'm sorry you didn't like it! I loved it, but do feel they engaged in fanservice, a problem with shows that interact and seek out feedback so regularly from fans (such as all the USA shows do on Twitter).

Yeah, I think that was the problem, they had ideas for a few WTF moments that they didn't bother stringing them together in a way that didn't actually make any sense at all. Also the way they write Alex seriously confuses me, and what they're doing with Kate sort of pisses me off. "Neal, don't be so dumb as to throw your cushy new job life away making sure your girlfriend of the last eight years is okay!" What?

Okay, did it bother you that as soon as they saw each other, they did not run to each other? I was really surprised at that little wave Neal gave Kate before he knew Peter was at the airstrip. Wave? Um? What? Your girlfriend has been missing for a long time now and you wave at her? It was strange that she didn't run out of the plane into his arms...

blah blah blah, you're right, it was all disjointed.

It bothers me how unimportant we're supposed to find Kate. I mean, they've been living together for years, she waited for him while he was in prison, they were presumably together for a long time before that ... and he's supposed to value his new job more? IT IS A COOL JOB AND PETER IS A GOOD FREIND, but um. And yeah, the wave thing sort of like, demonstrates all that pretty well. Weren't we supposed to think she was in danger? Wasn't Neal supposed to think that, at least?

I just don't get what they're doing with that, there.

I enjoyed the ending, but I do agree with you, it didn't really make much sense at all. Clearly catering to the fans here, but whatever, I'm still going to watch the second season when it airs.

I probably am too, for all of my bitching about it. But man, I am so so disappointed. I feel like the writing quality of this episode versus like ... every other episode, was bizarrely out of whack, you know?

[identity profile] yamikaosu.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
You know, when I watched it last night, I was like okay, that was okay. Even though the fanbase seemed be going OMG WASN'T THAT AWESOME SEE HOW AWESOME IT WAS. But in retrospect, it is kind of wtf.

I don't know, it won't stop me from seeing how things play out next season though. :/

As for Kate...personally I kind of hope we see her next season and she somehow SHATTERS everything people think they know about her. They've played Kate negatively this entire time, making her seem pretty one-sided almost, so we're due for a twist. Killing her in a plane explosion is not a twist.

There seemed to be like, serious timing issues. Alex betrays Neal dun dun duuuuun except she comes back five minutes later, no big deal? What the hell? And then there was the scene were Peter hangs up the phone when he's talking to Diana and then appears in frame like thirty second later. What? I mean if they were in the same area the whole time, 1) that is a lame fakeout, and 2) you'd think one of them would've mentioned it. Or else I totally missed something explanatory, there.

But yeah. what they're doing with Kate is seriously pissing me off. Kate is supposed to be important to Neal, so what gives? Right now we're supposed to doubt her but seriously, on what evidence? Just on Peter's say-so I guess, since we never actually get to see her and everything we know about her is from stuff Neal and Peter have said. Plus Neal talks about her a lot but doesn't actually act as though she's really that important to him--like [livejournal.com profile] neversince pointed out about the handwave.

I AM DISAPPOINT, White Collar. I am disappoint.

[identity profile] yamikaosu.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
I still have no idea how I feel about Alex. The stealing the music box and then reappearing with kind of had me going "...what?" I mean, I guess it's supposed to be noble and maybe make the audience feel like she's a more trustworthy character or something? As for Diana...I don't remember or didn't notice that? She was supposed to have been in DC, so I think she was only in town because Peter called her.

You'd think with the lengths he's gone through for her - breaking out of jail, getting the music box, and everything in between...I don't know, it's as if he acts like she's important when she's not around? Yeah, the handwave was kind of :/ ...come on, guys, you've been separated forever and now it's just a casual wave? They should have been RUNNING TO EACH OTHERS' ARMS. Unless they're trying to do some take where Kate knew she had to get Neal on the plane ASAP for the explosion but that's just another LET'S ALL HATE KATE angle and just ugh. Or Neal's been poisoned with all this doubt about Kate even though she's still his "weakness." All we've "heard" is Peter's meeting with her and random "don't try to come after me, Neal", but there's nothing that's for sure that that was the truth, or that Kate was presenting the truth to him and just adksfjdf. Again, so one-sided.

Yeah. It sort of annoys me because I've been reccing this show to people partially on the basis of "lots of female characters! well written, too, it's great!" And then you have Kate, a character we only know based on male character's opinions of her. We can't even make a guess at what she was ~really~ up to because really, we don't know her whatsoever. After fourteen episodes, we're at the same place with her as we were in the pilot, and I think we're supposed to just trust Peter and Elizabeth's opinions of her--and seriously, what is up with, "You can be in love with the idea of someone rather than being in love with them." What is Elizabeth even basing that on. She doesn't know Kate, either!

I JUST DO NOT GET why the "right" and "smart" thing for Neal to do is stay with his new cushy job and walk away from his girlfriend of the past 8+ years without even making sure she's alright.
