Date: 2008-02-26 11:04 pm (UTC)Lloyd slowed to a walk as he approached the grave, and standing in front of it, he let his hand rest on the headstone. “It’s been a long time,” he said, by way of apology. “I’ve… been up to some stuff. Lots of stuff. Good stuff.” He nodded.
She didn’t really say anything back.
That didn’t stop him from detailing his adventures of the last ten years or so—the people he’d met, the cities he’d helped, the monsters he’d beaten. His voice was rising and falling, he told the stories like he had an audience—he ignored the fact that the only response he got was the wind whistling through the clearing.
At the conclusion, he smiled. “Nice talking to you, Mom,” he said, softly.
And then he moved down the line.
“Hi, Dad,” he said, coming to a stop in front of Dirk’s marker. “I’ve been keeping up on the Dwarven Vows, just like I said I would, I say them before my dinner everyday…”
Next was Genis. “I know you wanted me to finish that book, and, well, I’ve been trying… One page a day every night I remember, and now I’m on… Well, okay, the third one…”
And Raine. “I’ve been trying to study, Professor, but, you know how it is… Did you know that there’s some animals no one’s ever seen before in Tethe’Alla? I kind of had to kill them because they try to eat people, but I bet you’d find them really interesting…”
Colette. “I— … It hasn’t really been that long, has it? There were some puppies in Luin, I thought of you when I saw them…”
He moved on, coming to a stop in front of the final grave—the one with the freshest earth but the smallest marker. Fifteen years ago, Lloyd had run out of companions to bury, and with the last of them had gone the strength to construct anything more than the simplest monument. He stood in front of it, silent for the first time in an hour, clenching his hands into fists.
And then, “Kratos.”
Kratos didn’t answer, either.
Lloyd closed his eyes. “I… I just wanted to say that I think I know how you feel, now. Everything’s changing, everyone’s gone, and I’m…” He clenched and unclenched his fists, anger and betrayal overwhelming his grief and loss. Kratos must have known, why hadn’t he told him? Why hadn’t he told him how to stop it, why hadn’t he…
Lloyd relaxed his hands, and the anger went out of him.
He sighed. “I hope you’re resting in peace, Dad.”
