Oh, man, I totally forgot about that, and I made a note of it when I saw the movie last time, too. He just looked so crushed and he's a kid even compared to the rest of the cast who are basically kids, too. Rationally someone might tell him that there's nothing he could've done but he wouldn't necessarily buy that...
... Actually, now I'm picturing him trying to apologize to Spock and Spock going, "It would be unreasonable to expect you to perform beyond your physical capabilities" or something asinine he thinks is forgiveness and Chehov being all, "VUT NO." Poor, poor Chehov.
