Yesterday me, my brother, and my sister went to a metal festival which featured, among other bands, Trivium and All That Remains. The bands themselves were great but I found myself with way less tolerance for ... the subculture, I guess. I don't know what annoyed me more, comments from the banks like "This song is dedicated to the pussy lips of all the ladies out there!" or the behavior of the goddamn crowd. I was kicked in the head, hard enough to feel dizzy for about half an hour, knocked down, deliberately shoved around, had a bucket of hot water thrown in my fucking face, nearly had a middle aged woman dropped on my head—her boyfriend picked her up and threw her into a very sparse crowd, and I bolted and left my brother to catch her—and saw a drunk guy collapse onto the grass. I tried to help with him, because I thought he honestly needed medical attention, his eyes were rolling back into his head and he looked like he might've actually been O.D.ing on something, and but he took off into the crowd before anyone could figure out how to signal security. I'm pretty sure they found him eventually, like fifteen guards showed up a couple minutes later.

Okay, when I put it like that, the crowd was way worse. The bands were still annoying, though! I'll note that Trivium, my favorite still-alive/currently-writing-good-music band, said absolutely nothing obnoxious and were as always fantastic and enthusiastic and awesome, even amid technical difficulties which were so bad that the lead singer was reduced to singing la la la la la la la lalalalalalala la la to the tune of a missing guitar solo, at one point.

I guess I have crossed the line from, "I am totally hardcore enough to handle all of this!" to "Oh, Lord, you're a bunch of immature jackholes." It totally staggers me that most of the people doing this shit are my age or older, and if I feel mature in a crowd of my peers, that is a bad fucking sign. The upside of all this is the fact that actual concerts, as opposed to festivals, are much less likely to attract that sort of asshole. And at a regular show, you're much less likely to have to pay twelve bucks for a beer and walk past a bunch shirtless men with swastikas tattooed to them.Like I said, it's a great subculture.

Speaking of subcultures which I am into and which you are probably not, I caught up with Ultimate Marvel last night! Oh ... oh my god. I know Ultimate Marvel is not very good but I've read it for years and it was basically my introduction to Marvel, and comics, and so I'm attached but ... It was never as bad as Ultimates #3. Okay? This is probably because it is fucking impossible for anything to EVER BE THAT BAD OH GOD. It fails on every conceivable level and I wanted to cry but couldn't stop reading it and the only thing good that could ever come out of it is the multitude of hilarious reviews panning it. But! On the bright side, I got the first volumes of the new X-Factor, and I pretty much adore it to death. Thank you, fandom_wank, for introducing me to something worthwhile.
