rocknloadWhen I decided to minor in Chinese last semester I actually had no idea that the class would run my life—my slave-driving instructors teach it all old school, that is, the slightly old-fashioned method of route memorization of grammatical patterns and vocabulary, which we are then drilled on. No pansy-ass conversation-based instruction in this class. This would shock my linguistics professors but it's actually effective, in an ... agonizing sort of way. I also cringe in mild terror whenever I hear someone say my name: "伍蘭妮!"
I'm also taking capoeira classes, which is apparently my earnest attempt to accidentally break my own neck, and starting next month I'm going to start tutoring local immigrants in English. On the weekends I travel great distances to put in twenty or thirty hours of physically demanding work for my father—like climbing sticker brush covered, possibly rattlesnake inhabited hills in Los Angeles to hammer nails into the dirt, that was two weekends ago. As the temperature hits a hundred degrees and the vultures circle overhead I complain bitterly to my father about how fucking sick I am of listening to my neighbors brag about their drunken party weekends and general uselessness to society—especially since they are often uselessly drunkenly partying like fifteen feet away from my front door while I'm trying to sleep—and he laughs at me.
On the bright side, I'm getting a motorcycle. It's sitting mostly unused in my parents' garage and I'm sort of tired of it taking an hour at least to travel three miles on the bus system, so now it's mine.
