It's a good thing those sleeping pills were almost totally ineffective, since I woke up early enough to lounge around for hours and then walk to my haircut! I was fashionably on time, for once. And then Rae explained that I'm one of her favorite clients, because I always have something cool for her to do.

Still at the salon! Rae wanted to know what I was doing. And yeah, I brought my computer with me. HAL goes everywhere with me (and I had the pictures of the cut I wanted saved onto the hard drive).

Freaky coloring due to me trying to fix it so that I could be seen. Me and Photoshop, we aren't BBF.

HI.

I feel ungodly cheerful.

I'm going to every night at least pretend I'm sleeping eight hours--like tomorrow, I gotta get up at nine, so I'll take the stupid fucking pills at one. Eventually, it may come true.

.. You are determined to drive yourself MAD, be it by icon or CSS or whatever!

We shall see!

Maybe someone needs to be around to present you with something new things to fiddle with at specific intervals, thereby preventing you from being utterly absorbed in a single, endless task!

You're just saying that because you've INTERNALIZED the views of the filthy majority, you [term that means bitch but does not denigrate women].

I'm going to force myself to close the window as soon as I'm done reading this post about how real feminists don't call the police when they hear a neighbor getting beat on.

I love the "But they might have DRUGS!!" thing. And the constand injunctions of police brutality. Okay, yes, police brutality exists, but do you know any cops who'd walk in on a DV situation and go "WELL, SHE'S BLACK! I GUESS I'LL JOIN IN!" Because I don't. Even though some of the cops I know are undeniably racist.

The vast majority of people, when in that situation, will not try to help--especially if the threat is only potential, especially if there's a number of people that "should" interfere and it's not their "responsibility." I've always just assumed it was a quirk of human psychology--I think there's a word for it. I never really wanted to delve into people's justifications for inaction. >___>

And most of the cops I know are racist--but more in an offensively ignorant "Man, all the natives ever do is fucking drink!" kinda way, not in a KKK kind of way...

I know. I think that Kitty person getting killed got brought up by someone who was appalled at all the bullshit...ehh.

Yeah, same. My cousin is always going on about how black people in Baltimore City, they are in gangs! And when I point out that he's generalizing, he responds that he is pretty sure about it, because they occasionally shoot at the back of the cop car. Which... there aren't many responses to. I still think he would help a woman in a DV situation out and be angry on her behalf, even if she was black.

I'm sure he would, too! I'm sure most people would--even if you're very racist, you generally don't want the people that irritate you to be beaten, raped, or killed. You'd have to get to the point where you're seeing these people as not human.

I had to close the window after I'd read about a third of it, it was actually making me feel sick. I can't even say "I hate people!" in response, because that's obviously not true--if it was, this wouldn't bother me so much!

I guess I hate PEOPLE WHO HATE PEOPLE. God.

I don't particularly understand it when people don't have empathy for their own freakin' species, man. If someone needs help, why the hell wouldn't you have the impulse to... I don't know, HELP?

A MUCH MORE PRODUCTIVE OUTLET, CLEARLY.

I completely agree in theory and I'd like to say I'm positive I would react appropriately in such a circumstance, but I remember a time when our one teacher - I might have told you this - had two kids stage a fight to prove a point. The two of them started goofing off before class, getting up in each others' faces, and everyone was laughing in the way that people do when there's mild violence in the offing; I think I was reading a book and not really paying attention. And then the "aggressor" kid started slamming the "victim" against the wall and he was going "ow, fuck, stop it" and looking scared, and no one's attitude changed! Half the room was still kind of going ahaha and the other half was ignoring it. And then the kid fell down and Mr. Heun came in and went "Why is no one helping him?" and there was dead silence. It was really sobering. You can be completely convinced that you wouldn't stand around when you saw something like that happening, and then... do it anyway, apparently. I like to think that it makes me check my reactions more, now.

VERY MUCH SO.

The thing about that, though, is that none of you guys did anything wrong--it was staged, the guy wasn't really in danger, and the situation wasn't such that anything remarkably out of hand could have happened! It could give you a hint, but it's not really a measure of how you might respond in a genuine situation, because it wasn't a genuine situation.

I think the point was that we didn't know it was staged when it was happening~ but true enough.

Well, of course you guys didn't know--but unless they're fan-fucking-tastic actors, I think it makes a difference.

People who are actually violent, actually fighting and actually out to hurt other someone else are pretty fucking terrifying, and most people pick up on those cues right away. You can just tell. It'll change your reaction to them, no question. So if there was ACTUALLY something terrible going on, your class could easily have acted a whole lot different.

*nods!* It was still a good message, though. Especially since it was NAZI GERMANY CLASS and the topic of the day was "Nazis and why Germany ignored all that Jew stuff."

Ah, but that's entirely different. For one, I'm sure self-preservation had a lot to do with why Germany ignored the Jew stuff.

It was a factor. There were tons of factors--probably not just one of them in any particular German individual, but a really complicated combination of all of the above and more.
