Man, you people produced more Watchmen discussion while I was asleep. I'm going to have to read over it after I have time, hopefully later today... Watchmen discussion is so fun.

ARTIST TYPES, of which I know there are plenty on my flist. I'm lookin' at all of you. My sister is something of a talented artist but has never done any work on the computer before, and she wants to start. She has a Mac and no other tools for this sort of thing. She should get a tablet, right? What sort of software? I don't draw, at all, as that meme a few nights ago should make totally clear. So I have no idea what she needs. Even your suggestions are likely to not mean a whole lot to me, but I can pass them on!

I am so not relaxing over this vacation. My parents are fighting, my room was destroyed while I was away, and I cannot let go of all of my school related anxiety. I check my grades a couple times a day, but none of the teachers have put in the midterms yet.

You might want to ask [livejournal.com profile] what9000. I know she does a lot of her work on the computer.

Well, I've never really talked to her except for a few comment threads in [livejournal.com profile] sf_drama.

You could PM her. She's really nice, I don't think she'd mind. :)

Some tablets actually come with Photoshop Elements. For really serious stuff you want the full Photoshop, of course, but you can do a lot with Elements, and, well, Photoshop's so expensive.

Well, there are, uh, ways around the cost. Cough. Cough. We have Photoshop on my computer already, anyway, so that is something!

Tablet, yes. If she has a laptop, I suggest one of the smaller models like the Bamboo, for travel-purposes. If she's more stationary, go with the Intuos. All are wacom products, and they come with small software packs that usually include Corel Painter and Photoshop Elements, which are base versions of the software you can get. It's a good start.

Depending on what kind of things she likes to create, I'd say go for the gold and pick up a Design Premium pack of Adobe CS3 or 4 (comes with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign). Or at the least? Photoshop. It has the most tools. If she's more painterly, go Corel Painter, but it won't have as much versatility when she's working on different things.

Tell her to look into OpenCanvas for general sketchy good times and some simple, slick tools. There's a free verison for download (1.1) that enables group painting and all that hoohah.

But yeah. Wacom, Adobe. Those'd be the biggies in my opinion.
