I want a goddamn cigarette.

Might be going to Sedona this afternoon! There will be epic hiking and possibly the mocking of very serious New Age peoples.

It's warm enough to ride my bike. Not to Sedona, but still. Fuckin' score.

Man, it's finally almost time to go to work. This has been the longest four hours of my life, I swear to god. I got up, took another shower, did my hair, put on clothes, changed my clothes, ate breakfast, cleaned up my room, checked my flist, found my helmet, found my gloves, found a package of Camels and decided I wanted to smoke one, resisted, read a couple hundred pages of American Psycho, made plans with Audra, probably spent too much money texting Bryce, watched the dance sequences in Newsies and actually put on makeup.

It's still only nine-thirty. Fifteen more minutes. Make it stop.

It's probably because Akira is a precursor to a lot of today's modern manga/anime, and the art style is a little different? More realistic and less stylized.

Smoking is such a horrible invention of man and I honestly wish we'd left it to the INDIANS and kept our liquor.

We destroyed two entire cultures and I see smoking controlling people I care about. It's almost as if smoking is a sentient parasite sometimes, and it scares me. Because NOTHING should have that kind of power over you.

I agree so much with this comment. I mean, just think. Without the commercialization of tobacco in the western world, our recreational drug of choice would probably still be opium taken orally in high concentrations, like it was before people discovered smoking! Which is medicinal. And the alcoholism "our liquor" encourages is SO MUCH less self-destructive than a pack-a-day habit. Famous sixties singers didn't ruin their voices drinking, after all! IT'S HARMLESS.

/sarcasm

Smoking is a bad habit, but seriously.

Huh, I read it wrong.

I never said in my comment that drinking wasn't a problem, either. But alcoholics seem to be better at overcoming their addiction than smokers. Not to mention alcoholism is a problem that people don't argue, really. But smokers seem to be a different crowd. Besides the fact that there's no moderation for smoking. Smoking at all is bad. Drinking in moderation is socially acceptable.

It's just sort of ridiuclous that we need all this shit to enjoy life anyways.

...um. You kind of contradict yourself there. "There's no moderation for smoking" combined with the implication that smoking in moderation is not socially acceptable? Wouldn't that limit it on its own, if it were so? And there is moderation for it; in the US, at least, there are increasing numbers of laws about where you can and cannot smoke, and Canada and a lot of other places are even farther along with that sort of regulation.

Drinking in moderation is socially acceptable, yes. I'm a college student and I see it all the time. I'd argue that it's worse for you to drink in moderation than to smoke heavily. Yes, smoking is stupid and you're killing your lungs, but because of laws currently in place you're probably not going to be doing permanent damage to anyone else's... and I'm pretty sure there are no recorded cases of five-car pileups because a driver was under the influence of tobacco. Smoking endangers you and the people who're taking your smoking break with you, and makes you hyper and edgy. Drinking kills your judgement and endangers everyone around you, especially if you don't have the common sense to make provisions for how inebriated you're going to get and assign a friend to "take care" of you and your group. And I'm not going to even go into other recreational drugs. Something being accepted doesn't necessarily mean it's good for you.

I agree with you there, and I never plan to do drugs recreationally in any way. It doesn't change the fact that one of these things is not like the other.
