She told herself it wasn't their fault that eventually, they forgot.

After all, it was hard to remember something that had no name.

As their memories faded, she moved from the third floor to the second, then the first; by the time she moved to the basement it was as though she'd never been there at all, as far as they were concerned.

There were other people there, too; forgotten people who had forgotten to breathe.

They didn't have names, either, or if they had them, they didn't share them.

Out of politeness (and having seen others do likewise), whenever another nameless person arrived, she would walk up to them and ask them if they had a name.

It was alright with her if they didn't answer, it came to be expected; until one day a nameless sat up and said, "Hi, my name is Susan."

Any normal person would have screamed and fled the room just as the woman had sat up, but the little girl was not so normal.

She just looked on quietly as Susan, no longer nameless, stood and brushed herself off, muttering.

"Well," she huffed, "this is just lovely, isn't it?"

"I-I think it's alright," the girl said.

"Alright?" Susan echoed, giving the girl a bewildered look. "We're in a...well. I don't know where we are but I don't like it a bit."

"We're in a—we're at the... hospital," the girl said. "Maybe you're sick."

"Sick? I'm not sick. I was my way to a meeting with..." Her voice trailed off as her fingers grazed her temples, irate expression waning.

"Maybe—maybe you got sick," the girl tried, feebly, she wasn't sure what she should say.
