If you have no reason to lie to me, I am operating under the assumption that you aren't. This isn't unusual, or stupid; it's actually necessary for communication. When people are already assuming you're telling the truth, it's surprising what they'll believe. Most won't believe in spaghetti trees, obviously, but when you have that advantage over other folks you can get them to think an awful lot.

So, anyway, when you take advantage of this by saying something completely reasonable and believable and then go, "Haha! You should've known! April Fools!" then you aren't clever, you're just sort of a dick.

I don't mind a good prank, but no one knows how to do it, damnit! And so I hate today.

What happened? :(

This is why my April Fool's posts are just [livejournal.com profile] efw-style posts.

It's just a general observation, I don't think I've really fallen for anything today. It's just the smug I OUTSMARTED YOU~~ crap that happens sort of pisses me off in principle.

I lie with a straight face to people in person all the time! But it is more a function of deadpan sarcasm and everyone recognizes it. I tend not to try to prank people because that's the extent of my lying, in general.

My mom told my dad when they were both fifty that she wanted another child for April Fool's Day, though, and hearing the description of how all the blood drained out of his face will never not be funny.

That's not really the same thing! I mean, if it's sarcasm with purpose. Of even sarcasm that makes sense. I've known people, or unfortunately had to help them, who had no fucking idea how sarcasm works, so they just act like everyday is opposite day or whatever. Would you like Sprite or Dr. Pepper? "Sprite. NO WAIT JUST KIDDING DR. PEPPER!" Is the bathroom on the first floor? "Sure? HAHA PSYCH SECOND!" I hate even talking to these people.

ACTUALLY, since I am on this tangent, I must share the story of the table I waited on who, when I asked if they wanted separate checks, told me no! BUT THAT WAS APPARENTLY A HILARIOUS JOKE and they actually secretly meant yes. And they didn't tell me. Until they got their check and were like WTF and were actually puzzled that I didn't see their brilliant humor in telling me the opposite of what they meant. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE I AM NOT YOU WHEN ALL OPTIONS ARE NEUTRAL TO ME IT'S NOT FUCKING FUNNY DO YOU WANT ME TO BE PSYCHIC WHAT.

That is different, too, because that's hilarious.

That's... just lame, though. It's not even a prank or a joke! It's just lame.

Exactly! So the moral of the story is that if someone causes you unimaginable pain that later causes you to laugh at yourself and tell the story to everyone, it is SUCCESS.

I know! Thus, my conclusion that they just don't get it. Or they are insane. It's actually a creepy feeling, talking to someone and having no idea if they are saying something true or the exact opposite just for kicks, because they give you no cues or anything. I DO NOT LIKE IT.

Agreed.

This one guy I know bullshits all the time and is really convincing about it. I once saw him convince his opponent at a scrabble tournament that he was illiterate.

But why does he do that. Is he like Shawn Spencer, just seeing how far he can go for kicks?

Pretty much. I admit that when I imitate him it's awfully fun, but I don't go as far as he does because it's usually just practice to see if I can control my face.

The face and your body language are really the most important part, I think. People are really really easy to trick, not because they are stupid, but just because they ... are. I think in regular conversations their brains just don't have time to fact check everything so a lot of stuff is accepted without question and you can start using that to erode their confidence in EVERYTHING THEY THINK IS TRUE and yeah you can go from there.

And my wording up there makes it seem like I AM EXEMPT FROM THIS but I am totally not.

I actually forgot what the day was until I saw the special editions of the campus "newspapers." (They get quote marks because they suck.) I admit the fact that almost no one I know cared did have me relieved, I lose patience with April Fool's pretty fast. :/

...Though I feel compelled to tell of a not! April Fool's prank my father once pulled. He had never been introduced to a group of friend my mom had made, so he went early to one of their parties (without mom) dressed as a priest and for hours fooling everyone into thinking my mom was somehow married to a dour Anglican minister.
